Curiosity, play and discovery: Presenting “Nature is the Answer” by Nate Williams
Nature is the Answer is the second print to be released for the Lustig Elements series. The first print released earlier this year, Lustig Elements Collection, kicked off this series developed as a way to pay homage to notable design pioneers Alvin Lustig and Elaine Lustig Cohen, and the Lustig Elements font, which was recently revived and completed by Craig Welsh.
Williams is an award-winning illustrator, designer, hand letterer and artist. You may recognize his work when you grab a cup of Peet’s Coffee.
Or you might have seen his playful patterns while shopping at Urban Outfitters.
Williams’ style of combining layered, organic shapes, decorative elements and hand drawn lettering is a perfect setting for weaving in the Lustig Elements font to Nature is the Answer. The horizontal number eight on the right side of the print is from the Lustig Elements font.
It’s also a play on Williams’ name and online handles, @n8w and n8w.com.
Williams says he was inspired to be part of the project, “It’s a great cause and Craig is passionate about his work with the Lustig font, I like to support that, and because it was creatively open. So much of our life is data driven so in my personal art and projects that are creatively open I trust my intuition and embrace spontaneity.”
Nature is the Answer was printed by Fabrik, and is available on four different papers:
1) CANALETTO Grana Grossa Cover BIANCO emphasizes the natural inspiration for the artwork.
2) EAMES™ Cover EAMES WHITE creates an extra level of sophistication with texture.
3) ESSE® Cover PEARLIZED WHITE adds a beautiful shimmer to the summery artwork.
4) WILD® Cover WHITE is a thick, heavy paper that allows for deep impressions, adding a layer of dimension and touch appeal.
“The paper is the canvas for the art, when you look close you see the subtle qualities of the different textures and finishes, and how each enhances the design in a different way,” says Williams, “Letterpress is a great art form, I love the tactile quality, and it’s important to acknowledge techniques of the past to inspire and inform the future.”
These bold, playful, summery prints are sized to fit in a standard 11 x 14 frame. They are available for $25 each and 100% of the proceeds goes to support the efforts of the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum (HWT) to preserve historic wood type and the art of letterpress printing.
Funds from the sale of Nature is the Answer are earmarked to help HWT get a new, much needed, forklift. It seems that the beloved Betty has officially been retired after having worked for the cause since the 1970’s. Her replacement will be fondly named Betty II.
Order Nature is the Answer on your favorite paper today to help support Hamilton’s mission. But hurry, because there were only 100 printed on each of the four papers.
